The shortest route to Queenstown is 72 km through the Cardrona Valley via the winding Crown Range Road. It is a challenging drive in places, but the views are amazing and you’ll possibly encounter friendly keas (mountain parrots) at the lookout on the top. The Cardrona Valley gained its fame during Otago’s gold rush in the late 1800's. Now the only gold is in the burnished swathes of tussock that cover the hills on either side of the valley. The historic Cardrona Hotel is a must stop for lunch and a drink or at least a photo and is only 25 km from Mountain Range.

More conservative drivers can take the route from Wanaka to Queenstown that runs along the Clutha River, Lake Dunstan and the Shotover River. This area is better known as the Central Otago Wine Trail region encompassing Wanaka, Cromwell, Bannockburn, Bendigo, Alexandra, and Gibbston with an international reputation for Pinot Noir. There are over 30 wineries and vineyards in this area offering tastings, tours, lunches and meals. Further along the Kawarau River Gorge you have the chance to experience or witness extreme adventure at its peak--bungy jumping over the brilliant turquoise river!

Further along SH6 and 15 minutes from central Queenstown is the Arrowtown Junction at Lake Hayes. On the corner you will find the exquisite Amisfield Winery & Bistro which should not be missed. Following the principle "Grown Not Made", this country style bistro offers a daily changing menu of organic and locally sourced produce as well as a tasting room open seven days. Carry on to Arrowtown, a quaint, picturesque settlement born in 1862. The town sits alongside the Arrow River - once the scene of a frantic gold rush. Arrowtown retains its historic character with more than 60 restored buildings from the 19th century. The gold days are long gone (although panning in the river is still sometimes a faint success), and Arrowtown's focus is now hosting visitors. Explore the Chinese miners' settlement, visit the Lake District Museum, sink a putt at the (challenging) local golf course or take a 4WD journey to Macetown, a ghost town only accessible by wagon track. Arrowtown boasts a range of cafes, restaurants and appealing shopping. For those with a sweet tooth, visit the Remarkable Sweet Shop or Patagonia Chocolates.
