Mt Iron is a local landmark. Abruptly rising from the gentle slopes that lead away from Lake Wanaka. A remnant of past glaciation, Mt Iron offers a spectacular vantage point to view the surrounding valleys, peaks, rivers and lakes. A circular walking-track leads through tussock and manuka shrubland, to the flat-topped summit and drops over the southern edge of the ‘iron’
Diamond Lake Track to Rocky Hill Summit? is a steady climb to the Lake - about 15 minutes and then the track continues upwards to the summit. A very rewarding hike which offers great views of the lake and valleys. Allow 3 hours.
Mt Roy is just a few minutes’ drive from Wanaka, yet rises over a thousand metres. It's an exhilarating full-day walk. A zigzagging track leads up through thick golden tussock to the airy ridge and summit. From the top, there are sweeping views across the inlets and islands of Lake Wanaka up to the shimmering peak of Mt Aspiring/Tititea.
The Rob Roy Glacier Track, in the Mt Aspiring National Park, is an exceptional day walk taking you into the alpine zone in just a few hours. Starting from the road-end, the track follows Rob Roy Stream through beech forest with a rich understory of ferns and mosses to the tree line. Here the bush gives way to low alpine vegetation and spectacular views of the hanging glaciers beneath Mt Rob Roy.Waterfalls line the jagged cliffs and keas (alpine parrots) fly overhead. The track is 7 miles (11kms approx) out and back. |
